American video teleconferencing software company Zoom has added a new feature that caters to pronouns, along with some options to manage when they’re displayed.

According to an ANI report, the feature pronouns will appear in parentheses next to people’s names in calls, essentially the same as how they have looked up until now when people have manually entered them.

What are pronouns? NDTV’s Gadget News360 explained  the new Pronouns feature as users being able to better express their gender and be treated more respectfully on the platform. Some common examples of pronouns are he/him/his, she/her/hers, and they/them/theirs. Pronoun sharing is particularly important to LGBTQ community members, especially people living outside gender binary. Zoom aims to help all diverse users express themselves correctly and respectfully with the new Pronouns feature.

The feature will also be visible under the people’s names on their profile cards.

When there are multiple users, the field will be off by default for other accounts, though the administrators can turn it on in their account settings.

By this new feature, people can also decide whether they want their pronouns to be shared in meetings and webinars.

The feature will be useful for those people who use different pronouns in various settings, but it’s important to note that pronouns are currently always visible on the profile card.

Earlier, Instagram and Slack both added the pronoun feature, and Twitter is working on a pronoun field for its revamped profiles.
