Netflix has a loyal following for its crime shows and documentaries. In the recent past, the platform has released several true crime documentaries and features that have received positive feedback from the audience. To that end, the platform is preparing to release a Netflix Original film based on the Mumbai Mafia.
The film, titled Mumbai Mafia: Police vs The Underworld, is directed by Raaghav Dhar and produced by Sobhi Gupta and Batul Mukhthiar under the banner of Minnow Films. The film’s executive producers are Morgan Matthew and Sophie Jones.
Longhurst and Matthews collaborated for the documentary based on the latter’s dad titled This Was My Dad: The Rise & Fall of Geoffrey Matthews, as producer and director, respectively.
“In 1990s Mumbai, a crime boss and his network wield unchecked power over the city — until the rise of “encounter cops,” who brazenly kill their targets,” according to the Netflix synopsis.
According to reports, the show is set in the 1990s, when Mumbai’s future was uncertain due to a slew of criminal activities and a feud between cops and the underworld. Members of the D-Company were ruthless and carried out several violent operations with impunity. Cases of drug abuse, extortion, racketeering, and terrorism threatened Mumbai’s safety until one day when the police force’s fearless encounter specialists stepped forward. A group of brave souls worked tirelessly to retake control of Mumbai.
The team takes one through those moments in Mumbai Mafia: Police vs The Underworld through interviews captured with the help of police officers who were involved in the fight and the police narrative. The creators attempted to comprehend psychology, tactics, and other factors.
