Drop witnessed in TV viewership for IPL 2023 opener; digital viewership on rise – report

TV viewership numbers for IPL’s opening match: BARC

According to BARC data for the first match of the Indian Premier League, the broadcaster had a reach of 22 percent [BARC, M15+ AB India Urban], compared to 18.3 percent for IPL 2022 and 23.1 percent for IPL2021.

If the numbers for OOH and FTA channels (Star Utsav Movies are excluded, the reach for the first match of IPL Season 16 is 19.9 percent, the second lowest in the last 6 seasons.

In terms of engagement for the first match of IPL 16, 33 percent is the second lowest TVS in the last six seasons of the T-20 tournament [BARC, M15+ AB India Urban]. The IPL 15 had a lower TVS of 30 percent.

Even when OOH and FTA channel (Star Utsav Movies) data are included, the opening match had the second-lowest TVR of 7.29 in the last 6 seasons [BARC, M15+ AB India Urban]. The lowest TVR in the previous six seasons was 5.57 in IPL 15.
