Spotify takes stand against Apple, ends In-App Payment for premium subscribers

Spotify takes stand against Apple, ends In-App Payment for premium subscribers
Spotify, the popular music streaming service, has announced that it will no longer support Apple’s in-app purchase system as a payment method for its Premium subscribers.

While new users haven’t been able to use this method since 2016, existing subscribers who had signed up through Apple could continue to do so.

However, Spotify is now informing these subscribers that they need to switch to another payment method if they wish to maintain their Premium subscription.

In an email notification, Spotify explains that it no longer accepts Apple’s billing service and advises affected users that their accounts will automatically switch to the free, ad-supported version of the service.

To regain their Premium subscription, users will have to re-subscribe after their last billing period ends and their accounts have been moved to the free version, IANS reported.

To initiate the new subscription, users will have to choose from Spotify’s accepted payment methods, such as credit cards or PayPal.
This move further escalates the ongoing dispute between Spotify and Apple, with Spotify previously accusing Apple of engaging in anti-competitive practices.

In February, the European Commission expressed concerns about Apple’s App Store rules for music streaming providers, stating that Apple had breached antitrust laws by limiting rival music firms’ advertising and restricting their ability to inform users about alternative music subscription services.

By ending Apple in-app payment support, Spotify aims to assert its independence and encourage users to subscribe directly through its platform.
