X bans 1.9+ lakh accounts in India for policy violations

Elon Musk‘s X Corp banned 194,053 accounts in India from May 26 to June 25, primarily for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.

The microblogging platform also removed 1,991 accounts for promoting terrorism during this period, bringing the total number of banned accounts to 196,044, IANS has reported.

The platform, undergoing significant changes under Musk‘s leadership, reported these actions in its monthly compliance report in accordance with India’s IT Rules, 2021. X Corp received 12,570 user complaints through its grievance redressal mechanisms within the same timeframe.

Additionally, the company processed 55 grievances appealing account suspensions, overturning four after review. Most complaints from Indian users pertained to ban evasion (5,289), followed by sensitive adult content (2,768), hateful conduct (2,196), and abuse/harassment (1,243).

Between April 26 and May 25, X banned 229,925 accounts in India, including 967 for promoting terrorism. The platform also handled 61 requests related to general account inquiries.
