Instagram is rolling out a new feature that allows users to completely reset their content recommendations across feeds, Reels, and Explore pages. This “fresh start” option, which is currently being tested, gives users the ability to reset Instagram’s algorithm when their content suggestions no longer align with their interests.
In an announcement video, Instagram head Adam Mosseri described the reset as a significant update. “This is a big thing to do,” he said, acknowledging that the reset would initially make the platform less engaging as Instagram will treat the user as if it knows nothing about their preferences. However, the app will soon relearn user interests based on new interactions with posts and accounts.
This reset function complements existing tools that allow users to fine-tune their experience by marking content as “Interested” or “Not Interested” and filtering specific words through the “Hidden Words” feature. Unlike these options, which curate content on a daily basis, the reset feature provides a complete refresh of Instagram’s recommendation system.
Meta, Instagram‘s parent company, frames the update as part of a broader initiative to improve safety for teenagers by providing more control over their feeds. The reset feature will be available to all users, not just teen accounts, which have stricter privacy settings and content filters.
The reset won’t affect users’ personal data or advertising preferences, which are managed separately in the settings. Despite this, Meta continues to face scrutiny from EU regulators over its recommendation systems, which some claim could promote addictive behavior.
The reset feature is expected to roll out globally soon. Users will find it under the content preferences section in their Instagram settings, where they can also review and update their following list.
