Prime Video’s ‘Red One’ sets record with 50 mn worldwide viewers in opening weekend

Prime Video’s ‘Red One’ has shattered records by attracting 50 million viewers globally within its opening weekend (measured over four days). This achievement marks the movie as Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched film debut on the platform, solidifying its place as a holiday blockbuster.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, expressed gratitude for the film’s success and its hybrid release strategy. “Given the audience response to Red One both in theaters and on Prime Video, the film will clearly be a perennial holiday favorite for years to come,” Salke said. She emphasized the importance of the combined theatrical release and marketing campaign, which drove audiences to cinemas and boosted awareness among streaming viewers.

Directed by Jake Kasdan and penned by Chris Morgan, Red One features a stellar cast, including Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Wesley Kimmel, and J.K. Simmons. Produced by Seven Bucks Productions, Chris Morgan Productions, and The Detective Agency, the film continues to screen globally on over 3,000 screens in North America and 3,300 screens internationally.

The film’s widespread appeal is reflected in its A- Cinemascore and an impressive 90 percent “Verified Hot” rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Its success caps off a stellar year for Amazon MGM Studios, following hits like ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ S2 and ‘The Boys’ S4.

On the marketing front, Red One’s trailer garnered over 460 million views globally. The film’s innovative promotional campaigns included a Red One-themed raid in the popular Roblox game ‘Anime Defenders’, which amassed 163 million game visits and 337 million video views. The raid was recently reintroduced to celebrate the movie’s Prime Video release.

Co-branded partnerships with iconic brands such as M&Ms, Farmers, LG, Duracell, and Salt & Straw further bolstered its theatrical debut. The studio also integrated marketing efforts with Amazon tentpole events, including a custom spot during the Thursday Night Football Ravens/Bengals game.

Following Red One’s success, Amazon MGM Studios has a robust lineup of upcoming films and series, including ‘Beast Games’ (Prime Video, December 19), ‘The Fire Inside’ (in theaters December 25), ‘On Call’ (Prime Video, January 9), and ‘You’re Cordially Invited’ (Prime Video, January 30).

‘Red One’ is now available on Prime Video, offering audiences the perfect blend of holiday magic and action-packed entertainment.
