Prime Video to limit in India number of TV sets having access per subscription

There may be some not-so-good news for Prime Video subscribers in India in the new year as OTT platforms, in general, tighten their financial belts and look at additional revenue streams, including a global crackdown on password sharing.

From January 2025, Prime Video will limit the number of TV sets — from the total number of five devices — on which the streaming service could be accessed.

At present, a Prime Video subscriber, paying an annual subscription fee of Rs. 1,4999, can access the streaming service on up to five devices. Under the new set-up, a subscriber can access the service on only two TV sets (out of the five devices allowed).

So, what does the new Amazon diktat mean? If a subscriber wants to have Prime Video on more than two TV sets, then additional subscriptions would have to be taken up as more than two TV sets would not be allowed on a single subscription.

“As part of your Prime membership, you and your household are entitled to enjoy Prime Video on up to five devices. Starting January 2025, we are updating our usage terms in India to include up to two TVs as part of your five devices entitlement,” the streamer said in an email advisory to its subscribers in India, which was reviewed by Indianbroadcastingworld.com.

The statement added: “You can manage your devices on your Settings page or buy another Prime membership to watch Prime Video on more devices.”

How would this new set-up impact Prime Video’s  subscription base in India is still not clear. But what is clear is that the streamer is looking at monetising every bit of its service. Its ad-supported Amazon MX Player tier has gained substantial traction in India as viewers veer around to low-cost options.

First-ever NFL Playoff on Prime Video: Meanwhile, Prime Video’s exclusive American NFL coverage doesn’t end with Thursday Night Football‘s season finale on December 26. For the first time, Prime Video will expand its NFL campaign into the postseason, delivering a special presentation of a wild card playoff game during the league’s Wild Card round.

According to an official statement from the streamer, the contest will take place on eitherJanuary 11 or on January 12, with the exact date and matchup announced following the conclusion of the regular season on January 5. The NFL season could be watched in India too.

Viewers in the US can watch the NFL Wild Card game on Prime Video in their living rooms on smart televisions, streaming media players, or set-top boxes by using the Prime Video app, which is also available on mobile.

Viewers can also stream on phones and tablets with NFL+.

What is the NFL Wild Card? It is the first round of the playoffs. There will be six Wild Card playoff games for 12 of the 14 NFL teams to make the playoffs (three games for the AFC and three for the NFC). The No. 1 seeds for each conference don’t play until the second round of the playoffs.
