Sony BBC Earth has bestowed the title of ‘Earth Champion’ upon Anand Malligavad, renowned as the Lakeman of India.
Hailing from Karnataka’s Koppal district, Malligavad has emerged as a key figure in water conservation and environmentalism, garnering accolades such as the prestigious Community Service Award from the Rotary Foundation.
Malligavad’s transformative journey commenced in 2017, leading to the revival of 35 lakes in Bengaluru and an impressive 80 lakes across India, encompassing 720 acres.
Beyond Bengaluru, his impact extends to communities, notably through the restoration of Kyalasanahalli Lake near Anekal in collaboration with the Sansera Foundation in 2017.
In 2019, he established the Malligavad Foundation, redirecting his professional focus from engineering to championing the cause of water conservation. Complementing his on-field endeavors, Mr. Malligavad actively engages with the younger generation, delivering insightful talks on water conservation at educational institutions.
