Apple has increased the subscription prices of Apple TV+ and Apple News+, according to its website, the latest company to raise rates following similar moves by other media and streaming giants.
The per month price of Apple TV+ has been increased by $3 to $9.99, while Apple News+ has been priced at $12.99, up from $9.99, a Reuters report stated last week.
Recently, streaming giants Netflix and Disney too have raised their prices as they look to boost growth amid intense competition.
Netflix increased subscription prices for some streaming plans in the United States, Britain and France when it reported results last week.
Disney said in August it would raise by 27 percent the price of the ad-free tier of the Disney+ service to $13.99 and hike by 20 percent the no-ad version of Hulu.
“Since launching four years ago, Apple TV+ has made history for streaming services by crossing major milestones in a short span of time, thanks to its extensive selection of award-winning and broadly acclaimed series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment,” Apple said in a statement.
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple, which gets about 20 percent of revenue from its services division, is aiming to become a go-to hub for streaming content. The company is redesigning its TV app to consolidate its various video offerings later this year.
The app aggregates content from iTunes, the TV+ service, live sports networks and third-party offerings like Amazon Prime. Apple is aiming to steer more customers toward the TV app, which sits at the center of its expanding video strategy.
Meanwhile, India Today Tech on its website quoted Apple as telling its reporter that there will be no adjustments to the subscription prices of Apple TV+, News+, and other services in India. It justified this price increase by highlighting the success of its TV+ service over the past four years.
