Doordarshan to b’cast 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship

India is set to host the 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship for the first time from December 3 to 10, 2024, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.

The prestigious tournament, presented by the World Handball League (WHL) and organized by the Asian Handball Federation, will feature Asia’s top teams, including 16-time champions South Korea, Japan, China, and Kazakhstan.

Championship Highlights
• Venue: Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi
• Dates: December 3–10, 2024
• Significance: The tournament will determine qualifiers for the 2025 IHF World Women’s Handball Championship in Germany and the Netherlands.

In a groundbreaking move to popularize handball in India, Doordarshan will broadcast the championship live, marking a significant milestone in making the sport accessible to millions. Highlights of the matches will air during prime time, with live coverage on finals day. The tournament will also be streamed live on SportCast India’s YouTube channel.

Swapnil Jain, Managing Director of Pavna Group and Co-Promoter of WHL, emphasized the tournament’s transformative potential, “This is a defining moment in the history of Indian women’s handball. Doordarshan’s grassroots approach will take handball to the streets and communities, inspiring a new generation of athletes.”

• Renowned for making global sports events accessible across the nation.
• Aims to establish handball as a household sport through its extensive network.

The championship represents India’s rising stature in international sports, with WHL and Doordarshan working to ensure the event creates a long-lasting impact. Pavna International School, Golden Eagles, and Kolkata Thunder Strikers are partnering to promote handball’s growth and foster grassroots development.

India’s hosting of this event is expected to inspire young athletes, particularly women, to consider handball as a professional pursuit, marking a transformative step for the sport in the country.
