In a groundbreaking move for the Indian sporting ecosystem, Esports will make its debut at the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2025 as a demonstration sport. The decision marks a significant step towards recognizing Esports as a mainstream competitive discipline alongside traditional sports.

The 2025 edition of KIYG, set to be held in Tamil Nadu, will witness young Esports athletes competing under the official umbrella of one of India’s largest youth sporting platforms. The inclusion of Esports reflects the government’s growing commitment to nurturing new-age sports and providing fresh avenues for India’s digitally-savvy youth, UNI reported.

The decision aligns with the global momentum Esports has gained in recent years, especially after its successful inclusion as a medal event at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou. As a demonstration sport at KIYG 2025, Esports will not contribute to the overall medal tally but will serve as a showcase of talent, strategy, and technological prowess.

Industry experts view this as a major milestone that could pave the way for deeper institutional support for Esports in India, from grassroots tournaments to professional training ecosystems.

While an official detailed roadmap is expected soon, preliminary reports suggest that multiple Esports titles—ranging from strategy games to sports simulations—could be part of the lineup. Selection trials and qualification rounds are likely to be organized across different states in the lead-up to the Games.

Speaking on the development, industry leaders hailed the move as “historic” and “visionary,” predicting that it will inspire thousands of young gamers to pursue Esports with greater seriousness and ambition.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has previously acknowledged Esports as a part of “multisports events,” and this latest initiative at KIYG 2025 is seen as a continuation of India’s progressive approach to embracing digital sports.

By integrating Esports into a prestigious event like the Khelo India Youth Games, India sends a clear message: the future of sports lies not just on fields and tracks, but also on screens and digital arenas. With increasing youth participation and the exponential growth of the gaming industry, the move promises to open up new career paths, foster digital literacy, and boost India’s ambitions in global Esports competitions.
