Idris Elba to lead TV adaptation of Chinua Achebe's ‘Things Fall Apart’

A24 is developing a TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s acclaimed novel ‘Things Fall Apart’, with Idris Elba set to star and executive produce. The adaptation will see Elba portray the iconic character Okonkwo, a resolute African warrior whose fierce efforts to protect his people and culture unravel as British colonization disrupts his world.

Elba, whose recent work includes ‘Hijack and ‘Luther’, will produce the series alongside Gina Carter through their 22Summers production company. David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka will also executive produce through Yoruba Saxon, in collaboration with Achebe Masterworks, PTI reported from Los Angeles.

Though no writer or streaming platform is currently attached, the series is expected to draw significant attention, given ‘Things Fall Apart’s status as one of the most celebrated novels in world literature, translated into over 60 languages. The novel, part of Achebe’s African Trilogy, explores themes of cultural conflict and colonialism, making Okonkwo one of the most unforgettable figures in literary history.

The adaptation will bring the timeless story of Okonkwo’s internal and external struggles to a new generation, emphasizing themes of strength, vulnerability, and resistance in the face of unstoppable change.
