NDTV India hosted the inaugural edition of NDTV India Samvad on November 24, 2024, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. Titled Samvidhan@75, this conclave brought together prominent leaders, jurists, and intellectuals to discuss the Constitution’s enduring relevance and role in shaping India’s future.

Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud, Former Chief Justice U.U. Lalit, Minister of Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, and former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad were among the notable speakers who participated in thought-provoking discussions on constitutional values and challenges, the news channel said in a press release.

Former CJI Chandrachud staunchly defended the collegium system for judicial appointments, labeling it a “very good system” within India’s federal structure. He also addressed misconceptions about its functioning, emphasizing its critical role in maintaining judicial independence.

Justice U.U. Lalit underscored the secular foundation of India’s Constitution, stating, “The government must remain religion-neutral. While citizens have the freedom to practice any religion, violence in the name of faith is a recurring challenge that must be addressed.”

Former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi highlighted India’s unparalleled diversity and the pivotal role of the Election Commission, the first institution enshrined in the Constitution, in safeguarding democratic principles.

Minister Kiren Rijiju identified 1976 as a significant period of constitutional strain and called for strict adherence to constitutional provisions to ensure national development.

Addressing judges’ roles post-retirement, CJI Chandrachud acknowledged their right to work as citizens while emphasizing the higher moral expectations society places on them.

As part of the event, NDTV recognized the outstanding contributions of former Attorney General KK Venugopal, who was lauded for his commitment to upholding the Constitution and advancing India’s legal framework.

Santosh Kumar, NDTV‘s Senior Managing Editor, announced that NDTV India Samvad aims to provide a consistent platform for exploring pressing national issues. He described Samvidhan@75 as the starting point for a series of dialogues to examine India’s constitutional journey and future challenges.

“The Constitution remains the bedrock of India’s democracy, embodying principles of justice, equality, and fundamental rights,” Kumar said.

The event reaffirmed the Constitution’s pivotal role in India’s democratic evolution, serving as a guide to uphold the nation’s core values while fostering inclusivity, accountability, and justice for all.
