A delightful clash of royalty and realism is set to unfold on Netflix as ‘The Royals’, a quirky romantic comedy packed with charm, drama, and unexpected chemistry, is set to premiere on May 9.
Brought to life by Pritish Nandy Communications, this series is a fresh take on love between two wildly different worlds—one of ancient palaces and crumbling traditions, the other of power suits and corporate boardrooms, PTI reported from Mumbai.
Set in the fictional city of Morpur, ‘The Royals’ follows the story of Rajkumar, a flamboyant, broke prince played by Ishaan Khatter, and Sophia Shekhar, a sharp and ambitious CEO portrayed by Bhumi Pednekar. What starts as a mission to fix the failing royal household quickly spirals into an intense tug-of-war between ego and attraction. With its vibrant setup and emotionally layered characters, the series brings alive the chaotic beauty of falling in love in the unlikeliest of places.
Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, and penned by Neha Veena Sharma, the show reflects the signature narrative style of Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy, known for their relatable and witty storytelling. The makers describe ‘The Royals’ as a “romance born out of fire”—where love is hard, messy, and sometimes inconvenient, but always real. “It’s about two people who never meant to fall for each other, but couldn’t help it,” they said, hinting at the series’ emotional depth beneath its glossy surface.
The show boasts a star-studded ensemble, with names like Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Sumukhi Suresh, and Lisa Mishra rounding out the cast. Their roles add layers to the central love story, giving the show the feel of a sprawling romantic ensemble with plenty of fireworks, humour, and tension.
Netflix India’s Series Head Tanya Bami called The Royals a reinvention of the rom-com for Indian audiences. “Rom-coms have a timeless charm,” she said. “With The Royals, we’ve created a modern-day love story that is unapologetically Indian, filled with sizzle, sass, and an emotional core. Think of it as Bridgerton meeting Indian royalty, with a lot more fire and fun.”
With its opulent visuals, playful dialogues, and heart-thudding moments, ‘The Royals’ promises to be the kind of show that doesn’t just entertain but lingers. Whether you believe in fairytales or not, this palace-in-peril meets corporate-crown story might just convince you to root for love all over again.
