Jio bats for 'affordable accessibility', rules out price rise

In its bid to gain further market share and maintain ‘affordable accessibility’, telecom major Reliance Jio has said that it won’t raise tariffs, even for 5G, at a time when its peers Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea seek to up prices to get better ARPU.

“This is the vision of Reliance Industries’ Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Jio Chairman Akash Ambani too,” said Mathew Oommen, President, Jio, according to a report in Times of India on Monday.

“As an industry, we owe this to get inclusiveness. More than 200 million mobile consumers still do not have the right experience with 2G, and the onus is on the industry to give them digital empowerment. The only way to make 2G-mukt industry is by offering affordable accessibility,” TOI quoted Oommen as telling its reporter.

“Let all Indians have access to data. We don’t deprive them of that. We want to deliver superior customer experience for all Indians,” he said.

Reliance Jio‘s ARPU in the second quarter of the ongoing financial year stood at Rs 181.7, while for Vodafone Idea it was Rs 142. Bharti Airtel leads the pack with an ARPU of around Rs 200. Airtel’s Sunil Bharti Mittal earlier this year called for ARPUs to be as high as Rs 300.
