The much-anticipated third season of ‘Duologue with Barun Das’ kicked off on a compelling note with celebrated filmmaker Kiran Rao leading the first conversation.

The episode, set to air on News9 on February 22 and 23, 2025, at 10 pm, offers a deep dive into the evolving landscape of storytelling, cinema’s post-pandemic challenges, and the complex narratives surrounding identity and gender.

Hosted by Barun Das, MD & CEO of TV9 Network, the show has carved a niche for itself as a platform that sparks thought-provoking conversations with influential minds. In this season opener, Rao unpacks her creative journey, reflects on Bollywood’s changing dynamics, and candidly discusses societal structures that continue to shape identity, especially for women.

Kiran Rao, known for her nuanced filmmaking and bold narratives, reflects on the evolving role of storytelling in the digital age. “Storytelling isn’t confined to cinema anymore. With social media, everyone’s become a storyteller. It’s fascinating how narratives now shape every facet of communication, including news,” she shares during the conversation.

Delving into the challenges Bollywood faces in a post-pandemic world, Rao highlights how audience preferences have shifted, urging the industry to rethink its approach. “We can’t assume audiences will flock back to theatres just because we made a film. With global OTT platforms, our reach is bigger, but so are expectations. We need to rediscover who we’re speaking to,” she explains. Her perspective highlights the delicate balance filmmakers now face—creating content that resonates locally while appealing to a global audience.

The conversation takes a more personal turn as Rao addresses identity and gender dynamics within society. Speaking passionately about the subtle biases women still face, she points out how systemic structures often deny them autonomy. “Even today, legal documents tie a woman’s identity to the men in her life—whether as a daughter, wife, or mother. It’s a reflection of how deep-rooted these biases are,” she remarks.

Rao also critiques the societal glorification of multitasking women, calling it a hidden form of exploitation. “We celebrate women who juggle careers and homes as if it’s a superpower. But isn’t that just masking the unpaid labor society quietly expects from them?” she questions, urging a deeper reflection on how society values women’s contributions.

Host Barun Das, known for his incisive questions and ability to foster meaningful dialogue, shares his admiration for the filmmaker’s candidness. “Kiran Rao brings a rare blend of intellect, creativity, and honesty. This conversation sets the tone for the kind of impactful discussions Duologue strives for—dialogues that go beyond headlines and dig into real issues,” he says.

Rao, too, expressed her appreciation for the conversation, calling it one of the most enriching interviews she’s had. “Barun Das doesn’t just ask questions—he makes you think. He even shared a formula with me that I’m going to remember for life. But you’ll have to watch the episode to find out what it is,” she teases.

With Season 3 off to such a strong start, Duologue with Barun Das continues its legacy of engaging conversations that challenge perceptions and inspire change.

Catch the premiere episode featuring Kiran Rao on News9, February 22 and 23, 2025, at 10pm.
