MeitY to roll out voluntary ethics code for AI firms soon

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is set to introduce a voluntary code of conduct for artificial intelligence (AI) firms early next year, aiming to establish ethical principles for companies developing or deploying generative AI technologies, The Economic Times reported yesterday.

The upcoming code will act as informal directive principles for companies, particularly those building large language models (LLMs) or training AI systems using extensive datasets. According to government officials, this initiative seeks to create a standardized framework for AI governance while awaiting the introduction of a formal AI law

The voluntary ethics code will include guidelines for AI development,

preventive measures addressing potential misuse of AI tech and collaborative effort aimed at widespread acceptance and adherence.

The framework draws inspiration from the G7’s 11-point AI code, which outlines principles for responsible AI use. However, India’s version will focus on local challenges and priorities while encouraging innovation.

In March 2024, MeitY issued an advisory to curb risks associated with AI, including bias, discrimination, and electoral interference.
