Meta, YouTube to counter AI-generated deepfake content

Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, has announced plans to combat the spread of misinformation ahead of the upcoming general elections.

In a bid to tackle the proliferation of AI-generated and deepfake content, Meta will empower its fact-checkers to label such content as ‘altered’ on its platforms. This move aims to reduce the visibility of misleading content by pushing it lower in users’ feeds and restricting its distribution, The Economic Times has reported.

Additionally, Meta will implement visible and invisible markers, watermarks, and metadata to identify AI-generated content that does not violate its policies.

The company will collaborate with various tech firms, including Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft, to develop tools for detecting and labeling AI-generated images.

Furthermore, Meta will establish country-specific Elections Operations Centers to address potential threats during elections, the ET report stated.

YouTube To Label AI-Generated Content: Considered by many as the most powerful and biggest OTT platform, YouTube has taken a significant step toward increasing transparency and combating misinformation by introducing a new tool in Creator Studio, The Economic Times reported.

This tool mandates content creators to disclose when AI-generated content is utilized in their videos. The move comes as part of YouTube’s broader efforts to promote viewer transparency and trust within the platform.

The importance of labeling AI-generated content lies in providing viewers with clarity regarding the authenticity of the material they are consuming. By prominently displaying disclosure labels within the video player or expanded video description, YouTube aims to ensure that viewers are aware of content that could potentially be mistaken for real individuals, places, or events.

The requirement for disclosure applies to various content types, including digitally altered faces, synthetic voice narration, and manipulated footage of real events or locations.

By enforcing these labeling regulations, YouTube seeks to curb the spread of misinformation and enhance accountability among content creators.
