The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has issued a show cause notice to Chrome Data Analytics and Media (CDAM), accusing them of releasing and commercially utilizing TV channel rating data without proper registration as a rating agency.
According to the notice from the I&B, CDAM’s actions have blatantly violated the Policy Guidelines for Television Rating Agencies in India. As a consequence, the ministry has instructed CDAM to immediately halt any commercial utilization of TV channel rating data.
Indian broadcasting world.com attempted to get a comment from Chrome DM, which was not forthcoming at the moment. In response to the violation, the ministry has provided a way for CDAM to rectify the situation. The agency can submit an application to become a registered rating agency, adhering to all the necessary prerequisites outlined in the guidelines.
Additionally, CDAM must present a detailed report on their methodology for sample selection, analysis, data reporting, and viewership measurements for TV channels.
To address any potential disagreements, CDAM has been given a 15-day window to make representations to the ministry. In their response, the company must provide a thorough explanation of how they believe the TRP Policy guidelines are not being violated.
The government’s actions extend beyond CDAM, as they have also sent a strong message to other news channels. There have been reports of news channels resorting to proxy agencies to issue measurement reports on their connected TV viewership numbers. The government’s stance on this matter is clear – such practices will not be tolerated.
Any further violations or attempts to bypass the guidelines may result in more severe consequences. The ministry remains committed to ensuring fair and transparent ratings practices within the media industry.
