The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has responded to the calls of civil society by taking a significant step towards accessibility and inclusivity for individuals with hearing impairments.

In a move that reflects a commitment to ensuring all citizens can partake in the nation’s celebrations, the Ministry has introduced sign language interpretation alongside televised events commemorating 76th Independence Day.

Over the years, members of civil society have advocated for greater accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments during key national events.

Responding to these appeals, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced that the Independence Day ceremony will feature sign language interpretation on television channels, MIB said in an advisory.

This step aims to allow individuals with hearing impairments to fully engage in the celebrations of this significant national occasion.

The telecast of the message by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on the eve of Independence Day, August 14, 2023, will mark the beginning of this inclusive initiative.

The following day, August 15, 2023, will witness the live telecast of the Flag Hoisting Ceremony and the address by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, from the iconic Red Fort.

These events will be aired across the Doordarshan network, providing a chance for all citizens to witness and celebrate the nation’s journey.

To ensure the widest reach, private satellite TV channels are invited to carry the live telecast of the Independence Day ceremony.

The Ministry is encouraging these channels to broadcast the events hosted by DD News, DD National, and DD Bharati, all of which will feature sign language interpretation to facilitate accessibility for the differently-abled community.

The move highlights the government’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and equal participation in significant national events.

By incorporating sign language interpretation, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is sending a powerful message of unity and ensuring that all citizens can share in the patriotic spirit of Independence Day. This step stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to leaving no one behind in its journey toward progress and unity.
