Netflix’s ‘House of Ninjas’ spotlights Jap culture

Netflix is shining the spotlight on Japanese culture with ‘House of Ninjas’. The series introduces audiences to the clandestine world of modern-day ninjas, blending mystery, action and a thrilling storyline.

In its debut week, ‘House of Ninjas’ shot to the #2 spot on the Global Top 10 Non-English TV List with 4.2 million views. It also ranked among the Top 10 in 71 countries. The compelling narrative and unique cultural perspective have made it a hit, which is a testament to the universal appeal of the story and its characters, the streamer said in a statement.

Ninjas, known as “shinobi” in Japan, have long been an integral part of Japanese culture. These covert agents of the feudal era were renowned for their skills in espionage, guerilla warfare and assassinations. Their influence was felt deeply in the political landscape of the time, and their legacy continues to be part of the cultural fabric of modern Japan.

The series imagines a world where ninja clans still exist, but are retired and living a normal life. But when a rogue clan threatens to shake up Japan, one family of former ninjas dust off their old skills to save the day, the Netflix statement added.

Kento Kaku brings to life the character of Haru, a talented ninja from the Tawara family. Despite his exceptional abilities, Haru struggles with a traumatic past rooted in revenge. Together with an all-star cast, including Yosuke Eguchi, Tae Kimura and Kengo Kora, they tell the story of this undercover family trying to blend into modern society.

The show is based on a story by Kento Kaku, Yoshiaki Murao and Takafumi Imai and is directed by Dave Boyle, who is also one of the writers for the show along with Masahiro Yamaura, Kota Oura and Kanna Kimura.
