OpenAI and AJP collaborate to support local news using artificial intelligence, with a $5 million commitment from OpenAI and up to $5 million in OpenAI credits for utilizing ChatGPT technology.
This partnership is part of OpenAI’s broader efforts to collaborate with media organizations. Recently, the startup entered into an agreement with the Associated Press (AP) to license a portion of AP’s story archive and explore the application of generative AI in news, Reuters reported.
The funding provided by AJP will contribute to the establishment of a studio where local news outlets can explore the possibilities of OpenAI’s technology. Moreover, grants will be distributed to approximately 10 of AJP’s portfolio organizations, enabling them to pilot and experiment with AI applications.
Sarabeth Berman, CEO of AJP, expressed the aim of promoting AI as a tool to enhance journalism rather than pose a threat to it.
AJP, a venture philanthropy organization, has raised $139 million to support 41 nonprofit local news organizations in the US, addressing the crisis faced by local news. The organization has provided support to 41 organizations nationwide.
