The 23rd edition of the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) is set to captivate cinephiles from February 13 to 20, 2025.
Renowned as a premier event in the world of cinema, this year’s festival carries special significance as it commemorates the 100th birth anniversary of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, with a thematic tribute honoring his iconic legacy, UNI reported Mumbai.
Dr. Jabbar Patel, the Director of PIFF, announced the details of the festival during a press conference in Pune. This year’s edition will feature more than 150 films from 81 countries, selected from an impressive 1,059 entries received from 107 nations. The curated lineup promises to showcase a rich blend of narratives, genres, and cultures, celebrating the universal language of cinema.
The festival is organized by the Pune Film Foundation in collaboration with the Cultural Department of the Government of Maharashtra and Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, Mumbai. Key figures like Samar Nakhate, Chairman of the Film Selection Committee, along with Trustees Dr. Mohan Agashe and Dr. Satish Alekar, were present during the announcement, further underscoring the importance of the event in the global film community.
The festival’s theme pays homage to the 100th birth anniversary of Raj Kapoor, affectionately known as “The Showman of Indian Cinema.” A symbol representing this theme was unveiled, setting the tone for a nostalgic yet vibrant celebration of Kapoor’s unparalleled contributions to the world of filmmaking.
Film screenings will take place at 11 screens across three venues in Pune.
One of the festival’s highlights is the prestigious ‘Maharashtra Government Sant Tukaram Best International Film Award.’ The accolade, accompanied by a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs, will be conferred on the best international film among 14 finalists, as adjudicated by an international jury. The award ceremony will take place during the festival’s grand closing event.
The festival not only showcases outstanding cinematic works but also serves as a platform for filmmakers, artists, and enthusiasts to engage in meaningful exchanges. From screenings to panel discussions and masterclasses, PIFF is a melting pot of ideas, innovation, and inspiration.
