The much-anticipated trailer of ‘Phule’, a biographical film based on the lives of legendary social reformers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, was unveiled yesterday.
Starring Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule, the film promises a compelling retelling of their tireless fight against caste and gender oppression in 19th-century India.
The trailer offers a glimpse into the Phules’ relentless battle against deep-rooted social discrimination, particularly against widows and Dalits, in a rigid patriarchal society.
Pratik Gandhi, known for his transformative performances, shared his experience of portraying the revered reformer and said, “I am fortunate to have lived the life of the legendary Mahatma on screen. I could feel the immense struggle and opposition he endured while dismantling an age-old system designed to oppress the most marginalized.”
The trailer captures the intense opposition faced by the Phules as they fought for women’s education, widow rights, and the dignity of the lower castes. With gripping dialogues and poignant moments, the film showcases their unyielding courage against a deeply entrenched caste system.
Actress Patralekhaa, who portrays Savitribai Phule, highlighted the reformer’s critical role in shaping modern India: “Alongside Jyotirao Phule, Savitribai laid the foundation for modern education and social equality in India. She transformed the lives of countless girls, yet her story is not told enough. I am honoured to bring her journey to life.”
Director Ananth Mahadevan emphasized the film’s historical and emotional depth, stating, “Stories like these, lost somewhere in history, need to be told to the younger generation.”
