A Russian court on Friday fined Twitter 3.2 million roubles ($42,011.29) over its failure to delete what the authorities said was banned content.
Moscow said last month it had slowed the speed of U.S.-based Twitter inside Russia and on March 16 threatened to ban the social media service outright in a month over content ranging from child pornography to drug abuse, according to a Reuters dispatch from Moscow.
There was no immediate comment from Twitter. It said earlier that it was worried about the impact on free speech of the Russian action, and denied that it allowed its platform to be used to promote illegal behaviour as alleged by Russian authorities.
Last month Russia had slowed down the speed of Twitter in retaliation for its alleged failure to remove banned content, and had threatened a total block if the U.S. platform did not comply with its deletion demands.
The Russian authorities had accused Twitter and others of failing to delete posts it said illegally urged children to take part in anti-Kremlin protests, Reuters had then reported.
Twitter was already under pressure in Russia after it was named as one of five social media platforms being sued for allegedly failing to delete posts urging children to take part in illegal protests, the Interfax news agency cited a Moscow court as saying last month.
Twitter has had several run-ins with the Indian government too in the past over posts related to an ongoing farmers’ stir on the outskirts of New Delhi. The micro-blogging site had been accused of not heeding to government directives to take down posts that it considered offensive.
Subsequently, on Feb 25 the Indian government brought in new digital norms for social media and OTT platforms, and publishers of digital news, which aimed at sweeping changes in the way content was consumed and distributed.
