Viacom18, which launched its sports channel, Sports18, on April 15, around the time when various Indian new years are celebrated, is now available on most major distribution platforms.
The pay channel is available in both SD and HD formats on Jiotv + (channel no: 261 HD & 262 SD), TATA PLAY (channel no. 488) and Airtel Digital TV (channel no. 293), according to a press release issued by the broadcaster.
Sports18, which was formally announced after months of speculation, has the broadcast rights to some of the premium sports properties, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, NBA, LaLiga, Ligue1, Serie A, Abu Dhabi T10, and top ATP and BWF events.
The channel, according to the official statement, will provide fans access to top programming covering international sports news, magazine and highlights shows.
At the time of the launch, Viacom18 Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj had said, “We are pleased to launch a dedicated sports channel for an audience across demographics and geographies. Sports18 will strive to be India’s most-coveted broadcast network by providing fans easy access to a comprehensive bouquet of international and premier sports content.”
Viacom18 is a joint venture of Reliance Industries-controlled Network18 and ViacomCBS, which own 51 percent and 49 percent in the company, respectively.
Meanwhile, a recent Bloomberg report, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, indicated Amazon Inc., The Walt Disney Co. and billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd. are among those that have signalled an intention to bid for the broadcast rights of the Indian Premier League cricket, setting the stage for an epic showdown for the prized asset in cricket-crazy India.
The report said besides these companies, Sony Group Corp., Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., and fantasy-sports platform Dream11 have also purchased the bid-related documents from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)
BCCI will be conducting the online auction starting June 12 and the rights period is for 2023-27. It is expected that with new and serious players like Reliance and Amazon in the sports arena, the IPL media rights could actually fetch the cricket board revenues up to $ 7 billion. Last time Star India (later taken over by Disney) had bought the IPL rights for a staggering $ 2.6 billion.
