Spotify, the renowned music streaming platform, is currently experimenting with a novel AI-driven playlist creation feature. This feature aims to empower users in curating personalized playlists through AI technology and prompts.
The emergence of the ‘AI playlists’ feature on Spotify was detected by a group of users, subsequently acknowledged by the platform to TechCrunch, albeit without delving into intricate details about the AI technology at play.
While confirming the test, a Spotify spokesperson highlighted the platform’s routine engagement in various tests, some leading to broader user experiences, and others contributing solely to learning endeavors.
“We routinely conduct a number of tests. Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader experience and others serve only as an important learning,” the Spotify spokesperson remarked, declining further details at present.
The feature itself, described as “Turn your ideas into playlists using AI,” is presently accessible only in English. Users exploring this feature encounter a screen where they can input their prompts into an AI chatbot-style box or explore suggested prompts from a provided list.
Upon selection, the AI chatbot initiates playlist creation with a response of “Processing your request…” and subsequently presents a sample playlist based on the user’s prompt.
Concurrently, Spotify recently disclosed intentions to reduce its workforce by approximately 17%. This reduction marks the company’s third round of layoffs in 2023. The move is part of Spotify’s strategic pursuit of increased productivity and efficiency.
Earlier this year, Spotify had laid off 200 employees (2 percent of its workforce) from its podcast division in June and slashed 6 percent of its workforce (around 600 staff) in January. Alongside these changes, the company’s chief financial officer (CFO), Paul Vogel, will depart following the latest round of layoffs.
As Spotify undergoes organizational shifts, its commitment to innovating user experiences through AI experimentation underscores its ongoing efforts to cater to evolving user preferences and demands in the music streaming landscape.
