Twitter under its 420-friendly or cannabis-friendly owner Elon Musk earlier this year became the first major social media company to allow cannabis advertisements.
Now, the platform is relaxing those rules to attract more advertisers from marijuana-legal states in the United States.
“Going forward, certified advertisers may feature packaged cannabis products in ad creative,” Twitter said in a blog post.
Cannabis advertisers could not previously show any products in their ads or promote their sales.
“They may also continue responsibly linking to their owned and operated web pages and e-commerce experiences for CBD, THC, and cannabis-related products and services,” Twitter explained.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been forced to cut massive costs and scramble for new revenue streams to justify his $44 billion purchase of Twitter, Associated Press reported.
In January, the platform also lifted a ban on political advertisements.
Companies that want to advertise cannabis products on Twitter, however, must follow a slew of rules.
Among other policies, they must be licensed and pre-authorized by Twitter, target only jurisdictions where they are licensed, and refrain from targeting anyone under the age of 21.
Cannabis advertisements are prohibited by Facebook’s parent company Meta, Google, and other major technology companies.
