Uma Mani has been recognized as the Earth Champion for the month of February by Sony BBC Earth TV channel.
Known as the ‘Coral Woman of India’, Mani is not only an accomplished artist but also a PADI-certified scuba diver, dedicating herself to the conservation of coral reefs.
Mani’s journey from the vibrant streets of Dindugul in Tamil Nadu to becoming a PADI-certified scuba diver at the age of 49, showcases a unique blend of passion and commitment to environmental preservation. Her decision was not merely about exploring the underwater world but a conscious effort to protect the fragile ecosystems beneath the surface.
Uma’s love for both painting and scuba diving converged, with her artistic expression becoming a powerful tool to initiate meaningful conversations about the threats faced by coral reefs, such as bleaching, pollution, and global warming.
Sony BBC Earth’s monthly property, ‘Earth Champions’, aims to honour real-life heroes making a substantial impact on the planet. Uma Mani’s story is featured in a short-form content format, complemented by fitting music, which is broadcasted on the channel and promoted across network channels and online platforms.
Rohan Jain, Business Operations Head at Sony AATH and Head of Marketing & Insights, English Cluster, Sony Pictures Networks India, expressed admiration for Mani’s commitment to coral reef conservation, labelling her an inspiration for all.
He said, “Uma’s journey mirrors her dedication driven by a deep-rooted passion for nurturing our planet. Sony BBC Earth takes immense pride in announcing her as our next Earth Champion. We hope that it encourages people to reflect upon their actions and move towards sustainable choices.”
Mani, in response, emphasized the power of art as a tool for communication. “I believe that art is a very powerful and effective tool of communication. It has helped me in raising awareness towards the need for coral preservation. Earth Champions is a great initiative by Sony BBC Earth. I hope these stories inspire more and more people to take green steps towards the planet.”
