Writer-filmmaker Sooni Taraporevala is all set to bring a new, dance-centric series titled ‘Waack Girls’ to Prime Video, which will stream from November 22, 2024.
Known for her celebrated works in ‘Salaam Bombay!’, ‘Mississippi Masala’, and ‘Little Zizou’, Taraporevala’s latest venture delves into the vibrant world of dance, exploring the unique and lesser-known dance style of waacking, PTI reported from Mumbai.
‘Waack Girls’ revolves around six girls who form a dance group in Kolkata, an unlikely city where waacking—characterized by its expressive arm movements—remains relatively unknown. Despite their lack of formal knowledge of the style, they boldly name their troupe ‘Waack Girls’ and take the stage to show off their passion and grit.
Taraporevala, who fell in love with Waacking after watching Mekhola Bose perform, shares, “This is a story that is unconventional and fun, and I am beyond excited to present ‘Waack Girls’ to the world.”
The series promises to blend dance with powerful storytelling, where each of the six girls faces personal struggles that audiences will likely resonate with.
The nine-episode series stars Mekhola Bose, Anasua Chowdhury, Rytasha Rathore, Chrisann Pereira, Priyam Saha, Ruby Sah, Achintya Bose, Barun Chanda, Lillete Dubey and the late Nitesh Pandey in pivotal roles.
Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video India, remarked, “While at first glance, this is a story about passion for dance, at its core, ‘Waack Girls’ is a universal story meant to inspire all those who dare to dream.”
Produced by Matter Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Jigri Dost Productions, ‘Waack Girls’ will be available in Hindi with dubs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
