WhatsApp introduces new context card feature for group chats

Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has launched a new feature to enhance user safety in group messaging. The feature, called the context card, aims to help users stay informed about group additions, improving overall security.

WhatsApp announced the rollout of this feature on Tuesday, stating it will be available to all users within the coming weeks. The context card provides users with vital information when they are added to a group by someone not in their contacts. This includes details about who added them, how recently the group was created, and the group creator’s identity, The Economic Times reported.

“This update allows users to decide whether to stay or leave the group and review available safety tools to stay secure on WhatsApp,” the company said. The feature is particularly useful for users who might not have saved new contacts or are unsure about the group’s legitimacy.

The context card adds another layer of security to WhatsApp’s existing safety features, such as silencing unknown callers, chat lock, in-app privacy check-up, and control over who can add users to groups. Similar to the 1:1 messaging experience, this update ensures users receive more context when messaged by unknown contacts.

With this new feature, WhatsApp continues to prioritize user safety and privacy, providing a more secure messaging environment for its global user base.
