YouTube has introduced a new experimental feature exclusively for its Premium subscribers, offering a ‘Sleep Timer’ that automatically pauses videos after a set period. This feature aims to enhance user experience by addressing the common issue of devices unnecessarily draining their battery when users fall asleep while watching videos.
The ‘Sleep Timer’ feature allows users to set a specific time for playback to stop, providing a practical solution for those who enjoy listening to podcasts, soft music, or watching videos before bed. By automatically pausing the content after a chosen duration, the feature helps conserve device battery life and offers users a more personalized viewing experience, The Economic Times reported.
“You can set a timer to automatically pause playback after a certain amount of time,” YouTube’s brief description of the feature states. This function is particularly useful for individuals who often fall asleep with their devices still running, preventing prolonged battery usage and potential overheating.
Currently, the Sleep Timer is available as part of YouTube’s experimental features, which are accessible only to Premium subscribers. Users interested in testing out this and other new features can enable the Sleep Timer by navigating to “Settings > Try experimental new features” within the YouTube app or on the desktop site. Once activated, users can select a time interval of 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, or 60 minutes, or until the video ends. The Sleep Timer option will appear in the Settings menu of the video player.
After the playback pauses, a pop-up notification will prompt users to extend the timer if they are still awake. If no action is taken, the video remains paused, and the device will eventually enter sleep mode, saving battery life and ensuring a more seamless bedtime routine.
YouTube’s decision to introduce this feature reflects the platform’s ongoing commitment to improving user experience by offering more control over how content is consumed. While the Sleep Timer is still in its testing phase, it is expected to be rolled out to a broader audience in the near future. However, as with all experimental features, there is no guarantee that it will become a permanent addition to the platform.
For now, YouTube Premium subscribers have the opportunity to explore this innovative feature and enjoy a more tailored, battery-friendly viewing experience during their nighttime routines
