YouTube is reportedly experimenting with a new feature that simplifies the process of sharing specific timestamps or clips from videos on its mobile app.
According to a report by Times of India, the feature is designed to allow users to share a particular timestamp directly from the in-app share sheet, eliminating the need for multiple steps currently required. However, the report did not clarify when Google plans to roll out this feature more widely.
At present, sharing a specific timestamp on YouTube’s mobile app involves a somewhat complicated process. Users must manually add parameters like “&t=” followed by the time in “XmXXs” format to the video URL, such as:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jfQHMjHaPI&t=1m30s
This method requires precise input and limits the sharing to a specific format, making it less user-friendly.
Earlier this year, YouTube introduced a similar feature for YouTube Shorts, allowing content creators to include clips from official music videos in their Shorts. However, the process remains limited as it produces a 60-second looping video and requires cropping of the timeline, which can be cumbersome.
The upcoming feature aims to address these issues by adding a toggle in the share sheet. When users click the share button while watching a video, they will notice this new toggle in the upper right corner. Activating it will allow them to share a specific part or moment directly, making it far easier to link precisely to the desired timestamp.
Currently, on desktop versions, users can manually add timecodes to a link. In contrast, on YouTube‘s mobile app, users have to adjust the time by scrubbing through the video timeline, and the app does not offer a straightforward option to set timestamps. After selecting a timestamp, users can tap “Copy link,” which generates a shareable text link that can be pasted into other apps.
Tests conducted by TOI-Gadgets Now on YouTube version 19.33.35 for Android did not reveal the new feature, suggesting that YouTube may be conducting a limited test with a select group of users. The new capability promises to simplify sharing exact moments from videos, aligning with YouTube’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and content discovery.
With screenshots also circulating online showcasing the new toggle, YouTube users may soon have a more streamlined method for sharing specific moments, enhancing content engagement and interaction across the platform.
